Hanna Schaer (Mezzo-soprano)

Born: March 15, 1944 - Olten, Switzerland

The Swiss mezzo-soprano, Hanna Schaer, was trained at the Music Academy of Basel by Joseph Cron and in Geneva by Heidi Raymond. Later she lived in Paris and went out from there to her stage and concert activity.

Hanna Schaer made her debut in 1974 in Basel in the rôle of the 2nd Lady (Zauberflöte) and has since then appeared on major stages : Palais Garnier (Rosenkavalier), Opéra Bastille (1991 as 2nd Lady in the Zauberflöte, Contes d'Hoffmann), Opéra Comique (Les joyeuses commères de Windsor), Théâtre des Champs Élysées Paris, Théâtre Châtelet Paris (1990 as Magdalene in Meistersinger, 1991 as Nicklausse in Contes d'Hoffmann, Ariane & Barbe-Bleue, Ring, Moïse & Aaron), Strasbourg (Fledermaus, Così fan is tutte), Bordeaux (Zauberflöte, Ring, Nozze di Figaro, Pelléas & Mélisande), and the Opera Houses of Nice (1992 again as Magdalene in Meistersingern), Rouen, Nantes, Metz, Tours, Lyon, Brussels and Amsterdam, at Teatro San Carlos Lisbon, and at the State Theatre of Basel. She also sang at the Festivals of Barcelone, Cuenca, Lille, Orange (Ring, Magic Flute), Aix-en-Provence (in 1993 and 2000), Montpellier (in 1995 and 1997).

In 1993 Hanna Schaer could be heard at the Festival of Aix-en-Provence as Bertha in Weber’s Euryanthe, at the Opera House of Bordeaux as Marcellina in Le Nozze di Figaro, in 1994 at the Théâtre Châtelet as one of the Rhine daughters, in 1995 in the Grange Sublime von Mézières as Marcellina in Le Nozze di Figaro, likewise in 1995 at the Opéra Bastille Paris as a Frau Reich in Lustigen Weibern von Windsor by Nicolai. Her repertoire for the stage includes also Dorabella in Così fan is tutte, Zulma in Rossini’s Italiana in Algeri, Pauline in Tchaikovsky’s Pique Dame, Annina in Rosenkavalier, and also Wellgunde and Waltraute in the Ring Cycle.

However, the centre of Hanna Schaer's career is as concert singer of oratorios and Lieder. In these areas she presents to the public an extensive repertoire. She appeared as concert soloist in France, in her Switzerland homeland, in Barcelona and Lisbon, in Turin and at the Festival of Aix-en-Provence. She has appeared with the Orchestre de Paris under Daniel Barenboïm and Bychkov, Orchestre Philharmonique de France (Parsifal, Oberon, Arabella, 3 Pintos, Ring), Orchestre National de Radio-France (Nelson-Messe, Ring, Osud and parts of Faust), Ensemble Orchestral de Paris (J.S. Bach's Messe in B minor (BWV 232), J.S. Bach's Magnificat (BWV 243), Mozart's Messe en Ut, Felix Mendelssohn's Midsummer night's dream), Orchestre National de France under Haitink (Pelléas & Mélisande) and the orchestras of Bordeaux, Nice, Strasbourg, Lille, Toulouse, Lausanne, the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra.

Future engagements include The Turn of the Screw at the Festival d'Aix-en-Provence, and on tour at the Wiener Festwochen.
