Biography
Robert Hale (born 22 August 1943 in Kerrville, Texas) is an American bass-baritone opera singer.
He made his debut in 1965 in Denver and sang at the New York City Opera before coming to Europe, where he was engaged at the Frankfurt Opera, Zürich and Wiesbaden. Initially singing bel canto roles, in 1978 he took the title role in Richard Wagner's The Flying Dutchman and thereafter made his career as a dramatic bass-baritone.
Hale was noted for his interpretation of the role of Wotan in Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen. He performed the part at the Deutsche Oper Berlin and the Vienna State Opera, also in Paris, München, Hamburg, Köln, Tokyo, Sydney, San Francisco, Washington and at the Metropolitan Opera in New York.
Until 2005, Hale was married to the soprano Inga Nielsen. Hale resides in Phoenix, Arizona and in the Summer of 2009 started performing in recitals and concerts (especially in churches) with soprano Julie Davis, under the name "Hale & Davis: Celebration of Song." Mr. Hale had previously been half of the "Hale & Wilder" concert duo, performing together in over 4000 concerts.
